More on De Tijd ePaper

From the project official website:

Programme:
Interdisciplinary Institute for Broadband Technology

Duration:
January 2005 - December 2006

Project Objectives and summary:
The objective of the IBBT e-paper project is to offer the possibility to newspaper readers to read their newspaper in a user friendly way on digital paper (e-ink). Research will be done to determine how publishers and advertisers can reproduce and distribute their digital content on these new appliances. A sample of “De Tijd” subscribers will be able to test the prototype terminals Philips developed, with a version of the newspaper. The purpose is to extensively evaluate user response, combined with advertisers response and more fundamental research about the long term evolution of the possibilities of the terminal and services.

Digital paper (e-ink) is a new technology for electronic screens. Further research will look into the different possibilities these screens bring. The screens have a very high resolution, are ultra thin, can be flexible in future versions, are ultra low power (the displayed information remains visible without power), have qualities similar to paper, do not need any special lighting and are readable in the sunlight. Information will be loaded electronically and then reproduced on the screen.

The reproduction application has an adapted surface (8,1’’). The representation of the content and the navigation through this content will be determined in this project. Research will also be done to optimise the distribution and packaging of the content.

The needs and expectations of users and advertisers will be analysed and transcribed to a user friendly design. The representation of the content and interface will be thoroughly tested on their user friendliness. The adoption of new technologies by the consumer and advertiser will also be researched.

Possible business models for services through e-paper will be analysed for the concerning parties. The research focus will lie on the one hand on those models that pursue new values for services via e-paper and on the other hand on business models that create new cooperation configurations and value based networks.

Research about the general architecture for the distribution of the content to multimedia terminals will be conducted for the wireless interface between the distribution network and the reproduction application. Both the distribution network as the terminal play an important part in this research.
